On Sunday, July 9th, Jake was confirmed. Jake and Pastor Ed chose this date because it is the 6th anniversary of his accident. It was a wonderful day. Everyone from the group home came to church to witness Jake's confirmation. Eventually I will post some photos.
At last I was able to visit Jake, and see his home. It is in a quiet neighborhood. The house is attractive and well maintained. At the moment they are remodeling so the smell of sawdust was everywhere. His room is small, but tidy and clean.
I am amazed at what Jake can do. We were always so quick to do things for him, rather than let him try for himself . And, of course, Jake was quite willing to let us wait on him all the time. Well, these wonderful aides have the patience and love to let him take care of himself as much as possible - or at least try.
It was wonderful to see Jake and get some hugs. 6 months is a long time between visits. He was going to come home to visit the end of July but unfortunately, he has developed two new skin ulcers and he could not tolerate 8 hours in a chair without respite.
So now we are shooting for the end of October. Then he can visit Kris's classes -she teaches high school history and economics - and give a little talk on life in a wheelchair. And maybe we can make a day of it at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
Jake has been invited to speak before the Minnesota Legislature. I don't have specifics at this time but he is very excited about this.
