Spring  2002

Wednesday, May 1st
I said goodbye to Jake this a.m. Terri, Dave and Jake are on their way to Minnesota and the Courage Center as I write this.

Jake, right before he left

Jake is both excited and scared. Two very natural reactions.

Dave and Jake
He is wearing the slippers instead of shoes because he has
persistent swelling/edema in his right ankle and
his shoes make it worse.

This is how he must ride because the roof isn't raised.
This is ok by him, he usually sleeps,
but it necessitates frequent stops so he can do pressure releases.
This is approximately a 6-7 hour ride.

Jake spent Monday night in the hospital. That day he had his baclafen pump adjusted and something went awry. He received too much drug. So the Courage Center sent him to the hospital ER, and the nurses there didn't know how to adjust the pump. They kept waking him up and giving him oxygen. Finally the doc went to the ER and did the adjusting. Needless to say, Jake spent almost the entire time sleeping.
Very frustrating and alarming for Terri, who is about 300 miles away.

Thursday, June 6th
We received some good news from Jake today. The Courage Center has detected slight tricep in right arm. This may not lead to anything, but it's good news, none the less. They are working with this now.
Jake went in the swimming pool today. He actually went under the water. This was his first experience in water since his accident. He was both excited and extremely nervous in anticipation of this. He loved it!
He is going to get some tutoring soon so he will be eligible for college. He graduated from high school last year but he does not have 'college entrance' credits. He still wants to be a psychologist (at Froedtert on SCI floor, of course).
Thank you for your prayers.
