9-26-2004 Jake had an ultrasound of kidney and bladder. He does not have any stones! This is a first since his accident.
He also saw an infectious disease doc. I guess at the moment it is a 'wait and see' thing. They will not restart the autologel until he is infection-free.
He's in very good spirits. We finally gave up on Gateway and bought him a new Hewlett Packard notebook. It's a downgrade from the Gateway but it works.
09-30-2004 They discovered that Jake has osteomyelitis (bone infection) in his wound. I don't know any more about it yet. Don't know what the treatment will be. What will be next?
10-05-2004 Now they are saying that maybe Jake doesn't have a bone infection. As I write he is having another scan. The following is an email I just received from Terri:
Sue: Jake too tired to talk? an oxymoron) She also told me that they were putting him on a preventative care program for his UTI's. As I understood it, (I wasn't listening completely because I was searching for information for her off the website) he will have a 3 day dose of Cipro available to him to start if he suspects he has an infection. This will get him on something immediately to start working until they can get final results back from cultures/sensitivities. She is a great advocate for Jake. I got her name and phone number for future reference if needed. Love |
More news as I hear it. Good day today!! and I am so glad I don't have to code this. :)
10-23-2004 Jake does not have pneumonia but has a very intense UTI. It has proven resistant to all the drugs that have been injected into his body so far. He is on IV meds now.
The docs are talking about another surgery - this time to mend that hip with recurrent dislocations. And while Jake is there, to also surgically mend his ulcer.
Jake is a little discouraged right now. That can only be expected with all these setbacks, but Jake is rarely dispirited so it worries me a little.
What a rollercoaster ride.
10-31-2004 Jake is feeling better so the infection must be waning.
He is so excited! He is going to vote for the first time. Nothing is going to stop him from voting. He has a totally complete day of doctor's appointments on Tuesday so tomorrow he is going to city hall to see how he can vote.
I won't mention who he intends to vote for but he is so adamant about voting that he is convinced that if he doesn't vote and the other guy wins by one vote it will be his fault.
It is so refreshing to witness his excitement, mixed with naivety and patriotism.
Are you going to vote?
11-14-2004 Jake's ulcer is slowly closing with Acticoat. This is a process where "they mix a silver product with water". The autologel was hurting more than helping. Jake's body seems to carry infection like we carry normal blood cells. The autogel, which was mixed with his own blood, not only grew new tissue, but grew infection as well..
I guess they have decided against surgical closure - they intend to let the Acticoat heal the wound. I think this is close to 1-1/2 years now, but it could be longer. Sometimes the years meld together on you.
Jake is in great spirits, as usual. He can't come home for Thanksgiving due to his ulcer. I hope Christmas will be different.
12-11-2004 Such great news! Jake is coming home for a short visit for Christmas. Terri is taking the van up to get him on the 23rd; they will be home on the 24th, in the afternoon.
Jake's friends are welcome to stop by and say "hi". Terri will probably have to toss Jake into bed when they get home due to his ulcer, but starting mid-afternoon he should be here.
This will be a short visit - Terri is taking Jake home on Monday after Christmas. His health issues demand regular attention and his needs would not be met here. It is a combination of his ulcer and the chronic hip dislocation due to the necessity of constantly laying on his right side.
This will truly be a Blessed Christmas! The first time in many years all my family will be together.
And I will get a hug from Jake! long overdue...
