Jake ended up in the hospital this past weekend.  He aspirated some food and couldn't cough it up.  After he was in the emergency department they found that his pulse ox was very low.  That, plus an inconclusive chest xray prompted a short hospital stay as an inpatient.  He's home now.
He is still battling a skin ulcer, and it's infected again.

Jake has pneumonia.  I was so afraid of this.  He is in the hospital again.  He is on an antibiotic and oxygen.  It hurts for him to speak.

His pulse ox dipped to low 80's so he had a lot of people in his room for a while.  Doctor, nurse & respiratory people.  They say it wasn't a code.

Would you please throw a prayer his way?

Jake's feeling a little better today. They wrapped something around  his chest  that vibrates (or something) Jake likes it. It's supposed to help loosen the gunk in his lungs.

Terri drove up to be with Jake.  Here is an email she sent me last night:

"He's doing very well. It doesn't hurt him to talk anymore and is receiving regular breathing treatments. He also gets this thing wrapped around his chest that looks like a huge blood pressure cuff. They turn it on and it vibrates and helps loosen the gunk. He's been coughing up pretty much gunk and has the pulse/ox on constantly. Mostly it's been at 93 but sways down and up from that. He's on a high dose of oxygen and has trouble breathing without it right now.

They just started him on IV antibiotics finally, but they haven't analyzed the sputum yet. They said it's hard to get a good sample but will try in the morning after he's slept the night. His right upper lung, and left lower lung are infected. The nurse didn't know if it was viral or bacterial but I think they treat all cases as bacterial because she said all pneumonia cases always get antibiotics. I told her the concerns about 'over-antibiotic-ing' Jake and she understood.

He ate quite well tonight for us---he said it was more he's eaten in days. We went to the café' and got him some mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and fries. We kind of all shared them but he ate 3-1/2 mozzarella sticks and 1-1/2 chicken fingers. Then when his dinner tray came, he ate almost all of his little salad and about ˝ of the unbreaded chicken breast.

I had to beat on him a few times with the assisted coughs but at least he's getting it moving now.

...he talked our ears off today.  Tomorrow will hopefully be a good day.

Jake is off the oxygen - his pulse ox is steady at 97%.  He still has the congestion and is concerned about getting cough assists once he goes home.  The staff at his group home is reluctant to give cough assists, and Jake needs them with this congestion.

Cough assists are rather scary at first.  You place your palm on Jake's lower chest and he breathes in - then when he starts an attempt to cough, you push (hard) in and up.  You feel like you are hurting him, but it helps him cough.

The doctor talked with Terri & Jake.  This is part of Terri's email:
"He (the doc) said most people that get pneumonia have other infection symptoms like a fever and Jake never had any of that---just the congestion. The RT (respiratory therapy) also talked about an actual "assisted cough" machine that perhaps Jake could get set up with at home. It has a mouth piece like the nebulizer and you breath into it somehow and it creates kind of a vacuum to help cough the gunk out. I don't completely understand 'how' it works, but it sounds like it would benefit him."

You know, that sounds like a plunger for the sink.

Jake went home from hospital a few days later.  The hospital staff admitted to Terri that, yes, they were about to call a code on him, but the sats went up so they didn't.
Jake had visitors this weekend.  Klaas, Sue and their 3 kids visited him.  Klaas & Sue are Jake's Big Brother and Big Sister since Jake was about 8 years old.
Jake finally gets his wisdom teeth surgically removed tomorrow.  He has been in a lot of pain for past year or so.  Most people can relate to wisdom teeth pain.

When they removed three of Jake's impacted wisdom teeth they discovered that they were all fractured below the gum line.  No wonder he was in such extreme pain!  He is not feeling the greatest right now but he knows it will get better.
Three cultures were returned from Jake's butt ulcer.  MRSA; VRE and E-Coli.  They mentioned using a colostomy bag for a while to keep the wound site clean.
Nothing ever comes easy for Jake.

Finally, after two days of postponing the trip, Terri was able to drive up to see Jake.  Wisconsin really got hit in December with snow!   Kathie went with her.
Jake was very patient - extremely excited that they were finally coming.  They had a nice visit.
